2020 Sadaqah and Zakat Initiative
It is that time of the year as the Mauritania Foundation has launched its annual Sadaqah & Zakat Initiatve; with the funds raised being distributed directly by Shaykh Salek bin Siddina during his return to Mauritania. The beneficiaries of these funds will be poor families in and around the city of Kiffa, as well as children and families in the mountain region of Tagnat—which includes the villages of Murabit al-Hajj (Rahimahullah) and Shaykh Haddamin, Murabit Ahmad Fal, and other great scholars of Mauritania. Notable Muslims in the West have studied and benefited from scholars in this region.
Families in the foregoing regions have come to depend on Shaykh Salek’s return each year to purchase basic items like food, medicine, and clothing. While there are many worthy causes in the Muslim world today, we cannot forget to support those who are committed to preserving knowledge of our religion—in the face of drought, famine, and, in many cases, starvation. It goes without saying that funds donated to the Mauritania Foundation’s Sadaqah & Zakat Initiative will be safeguarded and, insha’Allah, well-spent.
While Mauritania is rich in Islamic tradition and history it is an
extremely impoverished nation and over 20% of Mauritanians live on less
than $2 USD per day. The overwhelming majority of Mauritanians depend
on livestock and agriculture for a livelihood.

Significance of Sadaqah and Zakat
We all know the importance that Allah places on giving Sadaqah & Zakat as they are mentioned over and over in the Qur'an and in prophetic traditions. As part of the classical Islamic tradition the Mauritanians from a very early age study the Seerah and the virtues of Rasul Allah Salah Allahu Alayhi wa Salam and are inculcated with the love and praise of our beloved. It is very fitting to start this Sadaqah and Zakat campaign in the month in which we see manifestations of praise for our beloved at the highest.
Mauritania consistently experiences droughts and water shortages and most villages struggle with sustainable light sources and electricity. For a land so religiously and spiritually rich it is our obligation as an Ummah to try an enrich those in Mauritania that are afflicted with poverty and extreme economic hardship. Allah Says in the Qur'an:

الَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُم بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ سِرّاً وَعَلاَنِيَةً
فَلَهُمْ أَجْرُهُمْ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَلاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
Those who spend their wealth [in Allah 's way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.
